ASHI CONFERENCE: New Orleans, Jan/08 Fort Lauderdale Jan 06

Gary Poirier and Steve Beliveau flew down to Houston and then drove their big rented Suburban through the Gulf Coast to see the destruction and revitalization of the Gulf Coast to attend the ASHI Conference in New Orleans in January 2008.

During the conference, they attended several educational seminars, met hundreds of American home inspectors, and gathered as much information as they could to share with their fellow home inspectors back home.

During their stay in New Orleans, they drove through the most ravaged parts of the Upper Ninth Ward, while a few days earlier, their wives, Marla and Marjolaine took a bus tour through the Lower Ninth and other areas of New Orleans that have not recovered from Katrina, which happened 2.5 years prior.

Prior to this convention they also attended another ASHI Convention in 2006, in Florida, where they also drove to Key West, which had some hurricane damage from Rita, only six months prior. However, in that town, most of the damage had been removed and rebuilt.

Here is a link to a Picasa site with a few photos of the Gulf Coast, Ninth Ward hurricane damage and South Beach architectural design.

Inspection World - January 10-13/07 - Anaheim, California

January 10-13, 2007
Gary Poirier and Steve Beliveau attended InspectionWorld, the largest annual professional gathering for Home Inspectors. This year it was held in the Disneyland Resort, at Anaheim, California, and proved to be one of the more informative sessions in years.

The two inspectors attended a class devoted to international Residential Codes.
The other classes that they attended delivered real-world case studies and presentations that were very informative and assisted them to become even more adept at helping the consumer with home-inspection issues.

Continuing Education

To be involved in associations such as the Canadian Association of Property and Home Inspectors, or the American Society of Home Inspectors, it is mandatory to have a specific amount of “educational credits” each year. This involves participation in educational seminars, some of which are local affairs provided by our regional association in Vancouver, however, it also involves conventions, which can bring your home inspector to places as far as Ft. Lauderdale Florida, or Ottawa, Ontario or as close as Whistler, B.C.

During these conventions, I like to take personal sightseeing expeditions which involve looking at the local structures and the problems that the weather and local building practices and designs which reflect the needs of the homeowner’s protection against the elements.

Believe me, visiting New Orleans and Key West presented some interesting problems. I mentioned to my fellow home inspectors that New Orleans should be spelled “New Or - LEANS” because nothing is square or level on Bourbon Street!

We visited Florida and Key West this time, shortly after the hurricane Rita and Katrina hit both areas. Missing roof tiles were evident in Ft. Lauderdale, some wall and outside perimeter damage was seen.
The educational conferences provide me with new and interesting information that will help me help you in viewing your properties.
